Right and Left Hand Ball Bearing Hinges
Place one of the hinges on the gate to locate the spot for a solid installation. The more wood it grabs, the stronger it will make the gate. Drill pilot holes for the hinge screws. If the gate is wider than 5 feet, see the article in the Reference section entitled 'Butt Hinge Installation' for. We use the DuraGate Gate Depot Adjustable Hinge Kit for all of our driveway gates. The are made with steel L-Brackets that weld or bolt on to the gate, steel hinge pins that attach to the gate, and bolt on flange bearings to go between the two. Our L-Brackets are slotted to allow for adjustment of the gate at install.
In most cases the design of a ball bearing hinge gives it the ability to be used in reverse. Reversing the hinge means that you can attach it so that the end you prefer is upright.
You will find that some hinges require you to install it only in one direction.
First, you will have to decipher which direction you wish your door to open, and locate where the hinges must be for security reasons.
Select either a left or right-handed hinge based on those needs.

Installing Hinges
In most cases the ball bearing hinges are either surface mounted or recessed. There are instances where you will encounter a combination of both.
We highly recommend you check and re-check your measurements. You must begin with accurate measurements. While measuring make sure you plan for appropriate clearances.
A popular variety of recessed hinges are butt hinges. When installing butt hinges, decide where you need them to go. Most people say that 5-inches from the top and 10-inches from the bottom is the perfect spot for them.
Generally, you will need to cut the recess to match the depth of the hinge. Use a butt marker to indicate the proper width for the cut. The length of the recess must match the length of the hinge. The width, likewise, matches that of the hinge.
To make cuts use a chisel. Make sure that everything aligns properly. Determine where your screw will be and make some drill holes. Make sure the drill holes are a tad bit smaller than the screws. Attach the screws and secure the door into it’s hung hinges with the pins.
